The lobby was beautifully decorated in a colorful and fun french theme, setting the tone for the evening. These funds directly benefit Haverford choral students, providing uniforms, music, and assistance with scholarship among other program expenses. Together we raised $9362.00 for the program. If yo are in SW Philly, or passing through nearby, take a leisurely stop in Havertown it's a great half day experience. This is one of those little gems tucked away near most of the large, old cities of America. Think of it as a "little Winterthur" without the trip to Wilmington.Īll these historical places are great to see, but the Grange has a big set of advantages: it's close, in the suburbs, easy to get to, inexpensive, and has some really good restaurants close in the neighborhood (Trip Advisor and Yelp will guide you to some good ones). If any of that period is of interest to you, this fascinating peek at the buildings and furnishings is worth seeing, and you won't have to fight the Philadelphia experience (lots of walking, looking for parking, or subway and bus trips, etc., although a carriage ride is great fun). I lived on Ashurst Road, just behind the Grange on which the residence was located, for 17 years (the Ashursts were the next to last owners, dating from the AnteBellum until 1911 or so. A group has tours at modest prices, and a variety of events are held at the estate through the year. This estate has what remains of the luxury life which started in 1682 through to 1974 when what was left of the original was bought by Haverford Township.
